Can You Say Linux?

Oh, boy. Somebody here mentioned Linux as a stable OS that
might be worth checking out as a replacement for Windows. So I
did some research -- discovered that Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 was a
highly recommended and relatively droolproof release, that it came
bundled with a full version of WordPerfect 8, StarOffice 5,
Netscape, a bunch of games, a million utilities . . . and all for $29
bucks.
So I acquired it. Installed it today.
Hmmmm. I'm kinda-sorta impressed, in an I-may-not-be-smart-
enough-to-use-this way. I got the program up and running with no
problem. The kdesk interface is excellent, WordPerfect works very
well, I even searched the internet and found out how to bring up the
Dvorak keyboard (though I haven't found a way to make it the
default).
On the downside, I can't yet get my modem, my printer or my sound
card to work, and I can't even locate the help that would tell me
where to start. Since I purchased the program instead of
downloading it for free, I do get ninety days of tech support for free,
but I don't even know yet what to try so that I can figure out what
isn't working.
(I do think my sound problem may be that I don't have a sound card
exactly. I have a Maestro MPU401 Wave Table Synthesis Device,
or something along those lines.)
The modem and the printer I just can't get.
So . . . who was the Linux user? Any cheering words as I slog
ahead?
